EMPLOYEES INJURED WHEN ROOF TRUSSES COLLAPSE
Investigation abstract
On August 19, 1989, about 16 workers were engaged in building a roof on a shed. pitalized. They had erected 39 parallel wood trusses made of 2-in. by 4-in. lumber, spaced on about 2-ft centers, on top of 18-ft-high block walls. The trusses were 7 ft h igh at the front of the building and sloping to 2 in. at the rear. At about 4 p. m. the trusses toppled over in a domino effect. As they rotated to the side, the y flexed downward between their supported ends, broke apart, and fell to the gro und. At the time of the collapse, final adjustment of truss spacing was being do ne, and sheets of 4-ft by 8-ft by 0.4375-in. sheathing had been placed on the to p chords of the trusses being stacked and spread out.
