Event description

Employee killed when struck in face by flying air pipe

Investigation abstract

At approximately 7:00 p.m. on September 5, 1989, Employee #1 was preparing to ch ange the saw on an Albany bandsaw head rig. He turned off the power at the opera tions station, and began to blow down the saw with an approximately 4 ft long ai r pipe. The saw had not come to a complete stop when the end of the air pipe str uck the return portion of the saw. The air pipe was thrust up toward Employee #1 , striking him in the face. He suffered massive head injuries and was transporte d to Mercy Medical Center, where he died a short time later.
