EMPLOYEE INJURED WHEN TRENCH CAVED - IN

Investigation abstract

On September 14, 1989, Employee #1 injured his right leg when the trench he was in collapsed while he was shooting grade. The trench was approximately 40 ft lon g by 2 ft 6 in. wide by 8 ft 6 in. deep. The employee was helping to install a s torm drain in an old residential neighborhood. The trench was being dug with a b ackhoe (John Deere Model 310c). The trench collapsed because it was not sloped, shored or protected by others means. Employee #1 suffered a fractured bone in hi s lower right leg below the knee.
