An employee was attempting to splice a roll after a blowout. He was bringing the tail from the reel under the rider roll and was positioned on the tending side of the winder as the tail came around the back of the roll. As he attempted to thread the tail under the rider roll, his finger became caught in the nip created by the rider roll and the roll of paper. He suffered an open fracture and amputation of his left index fingertip as a result.
