A temporary employee was servicing a waste container while at the operator position on the back of a garbage truck. As he tried to grab the container with his hand, he leaned onto a hydraulic lever that activated the trash sweeper blade, which crushed his hand. This condition resulted in the surgical amputation of his right hand.
