Before the incident

Pt post-op recovery requiring fluids urgently. Walrus tubing in use with completely cell saver hanging. When hanging albumin some cellsaver was able to back-flow into albumin bottle. Since the tubing has no vent to open to allow the fluids to flow by gravity from the bottle a needle was inserted to act as a vent. When i removed the needle i attempted to pinch the safety cap closed with my left index finger and thumb. Unfortunately the needle slipped and poked my left index finger breaking the skin. I immediately put the sharps in the biohazard container removed my gloves and washed my hands. My finger was bleeding slightly from the stick site. Bandage applied. House manager notified and lab work sent.
