Before the incident

Operating flare on rim line and loading in WIP. Note that the employee was supposed to be wearing pants as part of our policy in the fall which would have reduced the extent of the injury.

What happened

Employee was running the flare station on rim line 2. One of the rim bands got misaligned when automatically being loaded into the gripper arms and into the flaring part of the station causing the band to fall over the railing of the transfer chute and onto the employee 's shin. The employee did not have enough time to react. This created a deep cut at which point the employee was taken to urgent care and ultimately the ER. This was an unnatural phenomenon so we performed a safety stand down investigated the issue and have added additional guarding in this area to prevent the possibility of a rim band from popping over the railing again. Employee was taken to St. Joseph Urgent Care and they weren 't sure if the cut would require multiple layers of stitches so sent him over to the St. Joseph ER. Employee was stitched up and then released with no work restrictions.
