Before the incident
During demolition a piece of stiffener steel was being removed under a 3P Lead Paint containment exclusion zone.
What happened
the stiffener was not supported and was cut to a point where it was believed enough of the stiffener connection was in place to hold its own weight while the ironworkers retrieved a support clamp. During this time the stiffener broke away from the main girder fell downward to the safe span (approximately 3-4’) and bounced outside of the 3P plastic containment. The IP was standing outside of the 3P containment unaware of the operation when the steel bounced onto his lower leg and pinned it causing a fracture in multiple locations.
