The employee was assigned to remove chip out defective concrete from an incorrectly poured stair section and prepare the area for re-pour. The work required extended bent-over positioning and repetitive chipping using a chipping hammer; and a fan was used to help with airflow in the work area.

While performing the concrete removal; the employee continued repetitive chipping and manual handling of concrete debris in a bent-over posture. During this task; the employee experienced a work-related injury physical issue associated with the repetitive motion and sustained posture required for chipping out the concrete.

The employee experienced a sharp strain in the middle right side of the back while unbending repositioning during repetitive chipping work; and the medical provider diagnosed a lumbar strain.

No single object struck the employee; the injury was caused by repetitive chipping work in an awkward bent-over posture while using a chipping hammer (strain occurred while standing unbending).

Back: Strained back from repetitive chipping work.
