I was attempting to start an IV on a hardstick patient. Attempted to start IV in thumb as it was the only vein visible and palpable after my first attempt in her wrist. When inserting the patient yanked away suddenly and the dirty needle poked the side of my lt thumb. Supervisor was notified as well as Employee health.
