The employee was performing routine maintenance work on a forklift in the Maintenance Shop. Specifically he was removing a plastic zip tie securing a “Do Not Operate” tag attached to the forklift’s steering wheel using a razor-type box cutter.

While cutting the plastic zip tie with a razor-type box cutter the blade slipped during the cutting motion. The employee’s left hand and wrist were positioned close to the cutting area and the blade contacted his left wrist causing a deep horizontal laceration. Emergency medical services were called and the employee was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment.

The employee sustained a laceration to the left wrist involving a radial artery injury requiring surgical evaluation and overnight hospitalization.

A razor-type box cutter blade directly caused the injury when it slipped and contacted the employee’s left wrist.
