Before the incident
holding combative patient
What happened
I was restraining a patient while medical staff was administering medication by injection. I had my right hand on the patient 's shoulder and my left hand was above the patient 's knee cap on her left leg to hold patient still during injection. Injection was administered to the patient 's left thigh area. The nurse had to reach over my left arm to access the injection site. After injecting the patient the nurse flipped the needle in her hand so that it was facing away from the patient but towards her body and my arm. Either I moved or she moved and the needle stuck me at the base of my wrist thumb area on my left hand.
