What happened
The employee was in the process of opening the hatch lid. As the lid swung open the pneumatic cylinder that helps hold the lid up and close slowly failed. As the employee opened the door it fell back down. The employee acted on impulse attempting to catch it from slamming closed. His finger was smashed between the hatch door and the hatch opening.
