Before the incident
The patient was an elderly woman writhing in pain complaining of nausea despite being given pain and nausea medication. The patient needed additional blood drawn so I used a 23g butterfly needle to draw the blood from the patient 's arm.
What happened
I drew the blood and set the needle to the side momentarily not realizing I didn 't press the button to retract it. In the process of trying to set the patient in bedn as she was rolling in discomfort I stuck myself with the used butterfly needle.
