Before the incident
I was scrubbed in to a surgical case and a suture was used on the patient. The surgical assist passed the bloody suture back unprotected and as a result the needle penetrated both of my gloves on the index finger of mt right hand.
What happened
It is best practice to pass needles in a 'protected ' fashion to avoid needlestick injuries. After the injury I went to the emergency department to follow the needlestick protocol. Blood was drawn and a MD determined that I did not need PEP.
