They were performing the a third measurement for accuracy and to operate the gauge they inserted their left hand into the open space of the gauge using it as a handle while pushing the gauge forward with their right hand onto the module 's front edge. During this motion their left middle finger still inside the gauge became caught between the gauge and the module resulting in a crush injury and deep cut.
