Before the incident
Starting an IV and drawing labs.
What happened
I was starting an IV on a patient and the first catheter that I tried had difficulty piercing the skin. When I pulled the needle back the catheter slipped off of the needle so I put it down on the bed and got a new one. I did not completely remove the catheter to activate the safety device. After I started the IV with a new catheter I was picking the trash up off of the bed and felt a sharp pain on my left palm at the web of my ring and pinky finger. I looked and noticed a small amount of blood inside my glove.
