Before the incident
The employee rigged a crane grab to a vessel operated crane hook and was supervising the shift
What happened
The employee was working as the night-shift superintendent on the dock of [REDACTED] during the active unloading of a grain ship on [REDACTED]. A loader was lifted into a hold of the ship at approximately [REDACTED] with the grab being left on the dock next to the hopper. The employee and a longshoreman then attached the grab to the shackles hook of the crane and radioed for the crane operator to begin hoisting at approximately [REDACTED]. The grab began to swing and rotate towards the leg of the hopper and the injured employee and the longshoreman tried to physically prevent the grab from contacting the hopper or the conveyor. Initially the injured employee was not in-between the grab and the hopper but as the grab rotated he became caught between the grab and the hopper and was injured suffering injuries to the left side of his pelvic area and lacerations on his left arm and the left side of his abdomen. He fell and the longshoreman immediately came to his assistance. Work was stoppe
