Before the incident

Employee was removing a finished good roll from the winder of the [REDACTED] asset. He pulled the roll that was separated into 3 equal smaller rolls down from the transfer cart so they can be loaded onto a pallet for shipment.

What happened

Operator noticed that the rolls were not properly separated after removing from the transfer cart. He then inserted his right hand between roll cuts B and A to try to pry the apart. As he inserted his hand the right middle finger came in contact with a portion of the roll that was melded together. His finger was jammed when it made contact.

Injury or illness

Mallet finger was the diagnosis along with a torn ligament that needed to be surgically repaired

Object or substance involved

The non-separated material that was close to the core of the roll. It was unseen and the employee used force to separate the rolls. He thought ti was cut and slightly stuck together.
