Pushing the billy goat machine.

The employee was performing his normal job duties by cleaning with an industrial vacuum (“Billy Goat”) machine while wearing cut resistant gloves. He noticed the vacuum was not working well blowing air outward from the housing. The employee noticed a large piece of tape on the housing of the vacuum that appeared to be covering a hole. While the machine was still running he ran his hand over the tape to try to find where the air was blowing out. He incidentally pushed his finger through the tape-covered hole which left him exposed to the rotating paddled impeller. His finger was struck and looks to have been flung against the housing wall injuring his finger. The employee reported the incident immediately and was assessed by the site occupational nurse. He was then transported to urgent care by the site nurse receiving treatment that included stiches. The employee was diagnosed with a fracture of his left index finger and has scheduled a follow-up with an orthopedic specialist.
