Before the incident
The employee had just finished moving a steel beam with an overhead crane. He was retracting a crane hoist upwards with a remote control pendant after the steel beam was transported to its resting location. While retracting the crane hoist the employee was injured.
What happened
While the crane hoist was retracting upwards the employee turned his back to the hoist and began to walk away. During retraction the hoist caught the underside of the steel beam 's top flange. This cause the beam to fall on its side. When the beam fell it struck the employee in the back of the right leg. The employee 's coworkers were able to lift the beam off the employee 's leg using an overhead crane within 10-15 seconds of the incident.
