What happened

Employee states she was finishing up an injection on a patient holding the injection in right hand. After administration she transferred the syringe and needle into her left hand and attempted to push the safety device over the needle on the bedside table top (pushing on a hard surface to engage is recommended by manufacturer). While pushing the needle down onto the tabletop the needle bent out of the safety guard and scratched left index finger. Needle discarded in sharps bin employee washed hands thoroughly. Encouraged to wear a band aid gloves to protect open scratch. Source blood work obtained Rapid [REDACTED] is negative. [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] bloodwork pending at this time. Employee Rapid [REDACTED] is negative. [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] bloodwork pending at this time. Source patient was not high risk of [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] per ED clinical coordinator and employee. No hx of incarceration iv drug use homosexuality or numerous tattoos.
