Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to improper storage of chemicals, exposing employees to hazards of fire, explosion and toxic vapor generation: a) In the storage building next to Mudd Hall, more than 700 cartons of unknown chemicals are stored with incompatible chemicals such as, and not limited to, flammables such as methyl alcohol, ethyl ether, and methyl ethyl ketone. Oxidizers such as sodium perchlorate and chlorox. Strong reducing agents such as sodium metal. Potential carcinogenic substances such as carbon tetrachloride, and benzene. Nickel carbonyl which can explode if vapor comes in contact with air; and (6) containers of gold cyanide that can release poisonous gases on contact with chlorox.
