General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing and struck by hazards: a) New Glenmore Post Office (19343) - On 09/05/97 employees were exposed to crushing and struck by hazards due to the inadequate temporary bracing of pre-fab wooden roof trusses. There were 43 trusses with a span of 59 feet that had been set atop the 11.5 foot high wall top plates. The trusses were approximately 11.5 feet from the bottom chord to the top chord. Employees had installed on the trusses 8 top chord lateral braces and 3 bottom chord lateral braces only. There were no diagonal braces on either the top or bottom chords nor were there any cross braces at the webbing. The exterior ground bracing was also inadequate in that the number of ground braces did not equal the number of required top chord lateral braces, also there was no lateral bracing, struts or end bracing installed. These bracing requirements were all detailed in publication "HIB-91 Summary Sheet" issued by the Truss Plate Institute. This publication was delivered to the site via the truss manufacturer at the time the trusses were delivered. Observed 09/08/97. ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible means of abatement would be to install temporary bracing in accordance with the Truss Plate Institute publication "HIB-91 Summary Sheet". NOTE: ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED.TION
