Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
Employees were exposed to a contact hazard when water would come in
contact with molten
metal at the rotary furnaces causing molten metal to fly out toward the
operator.
One feasible method of abatement, among others, is to implement the
following steps to reduce
the chance of injury from this hazard:
a- Require equipment operators to get off the truck and/or check the pans
visually for water before they dump the material into the furnace.
b- Repair the roof so water leaking from moisture on the roof does not
get into the furnace area.
c- Require employees to be behind the shields on the trucks when
dumping the material into the furnace.
d- Require operators to check button mold for moisture prior to taking
samples of the molten metal.
e- Ensure that the material put into the furnace is dry with no water, ice,
snow, or other liquid present.
