Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death
or serious physical harm to employees in that: foot pedal mechanism(s)
on machinery were not protected or were inadequately protected to
prevent unintended operations from falling or moving objects or by
accidental stepping onto the pedals:
a) The foot pedal on the niagara mechanical press brake number
N-120-10-12 located in the Main Shop was not guarded, June 11, 1985.
b) The foot pedal on the Niagara mechanical press brake number
1B60-8-10 located in the Main Shop was not guarded, June 11, 1985.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is:
1) Install rigid guard the length of the press (ram) activating control
bar to protect the 4 inch by 14 inch foot treadle at any location
while on the bar.
2) Two hand control.
3) Electronic foot pedal.
