Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards associated with the crane operations. a.In the area between Sarah's Way and Heath St. - During pipelaying and welding operations on or about 8/13/98, employees were exposed to possible crushing injuries due to side boom crawler cranes lifting loads of unknown weight which could lead to overloading and failure of the side boom crawler cranes. b.In the vicinity of Highland St. and Station 1201 - During pipelaying and welding operations on or about 8/13/98, employees were exposed to possible crushing injuries due to side boom crawler cranes lifting loads of unknown weight which could lead to overloading and failure of the side boom crawler cranes. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF ABATEMENT WOULD BE TO INSTITUTE THE USE OF LOAD INDICATORS WHILE LIFTING LOADS OF UNKNOWN WEIGHT TO ENSURE THAT THE LOAD CAPACITIES OF THE SIDE BOOM CRAWLER CRANES ARE NOT EXCEEDED.
