Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of being crushed or asphyxiated by a cave-in.
THE St. Raymond's Cemetery WAS PREVIOUSLY CITED FOR A VIOLATION OF THIS
OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARDS OR ITS EQUIVALENT
STANDARD Section 5(a)(1) WHICH WAS CONTAINED IN OSHA INSPECTION NUMBER
106761869, CITATION NUMBER 01, ITEM 006, ISSUED ON 02/21/92 AND INSPECTION
NUMBER 106762586, CITATION NUMBER 01, ITEM NUMBER 001, ISSUED ON
03/04/92.
a)On or about 04/27/98 - St. Mathew Section
Employees worked in an unprotected excavation leveling the soil in
preparation for
burials and placing plywood separations between coffins.  The excavation
measured
23 ft. 4 in. long x 10 ft. wide x 8 ft. deep.  The excavation walls were
not
sheeted,
shored or sloped to protect employees from a cave-in.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO:
1)Protect employees in an excavation from cave-ins by providing an
adequate protective
system such as, but not limited to, sheeting, shoring, or sloping.
ABATEMENT VERIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED.
