Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being cut or becoming entangled with damaged conveyor belt parts: a)Detroit MTESC, Brownstown Township, MI 48183: the TLS Circular conveyor belt had been damaged, tearing away part of the splicing device, exposing a piece of wire that could cut or entangle employees. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to maintain the conveyor in accordance with ANSI/ASME B20.1, 1990, Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment, Section 5.2(b), where lack of maintenance would cause a hazardous condition, the user shall establish a maintenance program to ensure that conveyor components are maintained in a condition that does not constitute a hazard to personnel.
