Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the conditions listed below:
a)  Demolition Site, 414 Camp St, New Orleans, LA. On or about 16 Jul 98,
the
employer failed to secure a load being removed from a structure which
consisted of burnt
and deteriorated wood beams. As the load was being removed, it shifted,
resulting in the
beams becoming vertical and being held by a corner of the bucket. The beam
eventually
fell to the ground, shattering. This exposed employees to the hazards and
injuries related
to being struck by falling material.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is to assure that the load is balanced and secure within the
bucket, and to use tag
lines, if appropriate.
