Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards at PCL Packaging, Inc. Spreader bars which are used to lift cylinders for the printing press were not tested and inspected by a qualified individual confirming the load rating of the lifting device. Among other methods feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are (1) Have current spreader bars evaluated according to the requirements stated in ANSI/ASME B30.20-1985, Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices, 2) Purchase certified spreader bars. Abatement Verification: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
