Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) being struck by, caught in between and/or falling from a collapsing pre- fabricated wood roof truss system and falling approximately 12', in that the trusses were not properly braced to prevent their collapse. The trusses on a storage building collapsed while under going construction due to lack of temporary braces on the 44' span trusses. The trusses did not have top chord lateral bracing, did not have top chord diagonal bracing, and did not have cross braces at the webbing, on or about August 9, 2000. Among others, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop a roof truss erection plan in accordance to the design and installation recommendations for the temporary bracing of roof trusses of the HIB-91 "Summary Sheet, Commentary and Recommendations for Handling, Installing & Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses" issued by the Truss Plate Institute.
