Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that the
employer was using PVC
(Polyvinyl Chloride) pipe for the distribution of compressed air. The
hazardous condition is
created when compressed air pressure is increased beyond the tensile
strength of the plastic pipe
allowing ruptures to occur.
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On or
about 3-14-2001, at
the job site, the employer was using PVC pipe for the distribution of
compressed air on an air
compressor for breathing air at the paint booth.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is
to replace the PVC pipe with an impact resistant
Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) pipe.
This pipe is recommended by the plastic pipe institute for this purpose.
