Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed
to hot liquified plastic:
a- Production Grinding Area - Repel/Extruder Machine:  Means were not
provided to protect
employees from being exposed to hot melted plastic material during
unjamming operation(s).
Observed 11/1/01.
One feasible and acceptable method, among others, to correct this
condition is to:
1- Purge the  machine of all residual melted plastic material and/or
energy that could result in
the release of melted plastic material, prior to stating the unjamming
operation.
2- Create a standard operating procedure for employees who are required to
perform
service
type operations that are not included in the normal lockout procedure.
3- Create a STOP in the standard operating procedure to include assistance
from the supervisor
or maintenance staff if the operation exceeds what is deemed to be normal.
