Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed
to struck by hazards from falling
truss components:
a) Worksite, Gerald Richards Park, Lower Pottsgrove Township - On or about
May 1, 2003 at 08:30
hours employees engaged in roof truss installation were exposed to injury
from being struck by the
collapsing truss components as the trusses were not stabilized with
temporary bracing.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct these hazards is to utilize the
recommendations of the Truss Plate Institute contained in the HIB-91
Booklet - Commentary and
Recommendations for Handling, Installing & Bracing Metal Plate Connected
Wood Trusses, HIB-91 Summary
Sheet and HIB-98 Post Frame Summary Sheet. These recommendations would
include but not be limited to the
following:
1. Provide temporary top cord wooden bracing spaced a maximum of 6 feet in
accordance to HIB-98
Post Frame Summary Sheet Table 1 and Figures G & H.
2. Provide truss bottom cord wooden bracing a maximum of 15 feet on center
in accordance to HIB-98
Post Frame Summary Sheet Figure I.
3. Provide temporary diagonal metal strap or wooden bracing in accordance
to HIB-98 Post Frame
Summary Sheet Figure J or K.
4. Permit a maximum of no more than two employees working on a truss once
temporary bracing is in
place in accordance to HIB-98 Post Frame Summary Sheet notes.
No abatement certification or documentation required.
