Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
a) On April 17, 2003 Kam Engineering, Inc. permitted employees engaged in
survey work to
be exposed to struck-by hazards from motor traffic while working on the
right and left shoulders
near the traveled portions of northbound I-294 without advance warning to
approaching motor
traffic of shoulder work.  Among other feasible and acceptable abatement
methods to correct this
hazard include the proper placement of advance warning signage and
channelizing devices or
shadow vehicles equipped with rotating lights or strobe lights.  These
abatement methods are
discussed in detail in Part VI, Chapter G of the Manual on Uniform Traffic
Control Devices
(MUTCD 2000) Millennium Edition.
Abatement certification only is required for this item in accordance with
the requirements of 29
CFR 1903.19(c).s
