Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to burn hazards from an improperly operating gas
appliance:
(a) Wolf grill: Two out of three pilot lights did not light or stay lit
properly when the burners
were ignited.
(b) Castle stove: None of the pilot lights were operating on the four
burners.
One feasible and acceptable method to reduce/eliminate the hazard is to
have a qualified
person/company thoroughly inspect the appliances and make any necessary
repairs to bring
them back into safe operation.  This would include a thorough cleaning and
check of all pilot
lights as well as gas valves and parts, at least annually and more
frequent
if problems are
identified.
