Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a crushing hazard from a falling wall.
a.  Site - The employer did not protect employees from a crushing hazard
when
manually lifting balloon framed wooden walls.  Five employees were
instructed
to manually raise an exterior wooden wall that weighed 1639 pounds.  While
in
the process of raising the wall the wall fell back towards the employees
resulting
in serious injuries to employees.
Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible means of abatement would
be to use either manual or mechanical/ electrical wall jacks to assist
with the
lifting and placing of balloon framed walls.
