Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that an employee
was exposed to fall hazards, while performing work from an elevated work
platform attachment:
On or about 03/26/08 at Macon, GA: An employee was exposed to fall
hazards, while
performing construction work from an elevated work platform attachment,
which was connected
to a CATERPILLAR TH83 Telehandler.
1. A restraining means or personal fall arrest system was not in place to
protect personnel from
falls.
No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT
METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS:
1. The employer should review the Safety Standard for Rough Terrain
Forklift Trucks (ANSI
B56.6-1992) and CATERPILLAR TH83 Telehandler Machine Safety Manual.
Caterpillar
requires employees, who are working from elevated work platforms, while
attached to CAT
rough terrain forklifts or similar equipment, to wear restraint devices.
