North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to electrical hazards while occupying a temporary labor camp: a) Two temporary camps located at 119 and 30 Forest Cove Road, Franklin, NC-- An eight room motel building (48 occupants) and a two story wood framed house (10 occupants) were inhabited by migrant farm workers and their families while the following electrical hazards were present: The large and small refrigerators located in the kitchen of the house were not grounded. Electrical outlets, located less than six feet from water sources in the kitchen and bathroom of the house and next to the sink in room #6 of the motel were not equipped with the appropriate ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) receptacle . In the entry way of the house as well as in the front bedroom electrical outlets/breaker boxes were not covered, leaving live wires exposed. In the motel, the laundry room and room #4 had uncovered electrical outlets with live wires exposed. Within the house there were drop cords running through the downstairs bedroom doorways as well as drop cords running across the floors. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among others, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to ensure that all electrical wiring meets local building code, National Electrical Code standards.
