Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to fire hazards:
Employees working in the foundry, especially the grinding area, were
exposed to fire
hazards in that the aluminum powder dust generated from the grinding of
cast parts was
not collected to prevent accumulation.
Among Other Feasible and Acceptable Methods would be to collect with a
dust collection
system as directed in NFPA 484, Standard for Combustible Metals, 2006
Edition,
Section 6.3.2.1.  "Machines that produce fine particles of aluminum shall
be provided
with hoods, capture devices, or enclosures that are connected to a dust
collection system
having suction and capture velocity to collect and transport all the dust
produced."
29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the
abatement of the
above violation is completed.
