North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of North
Carolina: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which were
free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm
to employees in that employees were exposed to: a struck-by falling slab
hazard.
a)facility, outside granite storage area, employee was exposed to the
hazard of
crushing injury from unstable natural stone slabs during slab transport
operations.
During unloading activity, employee was required to stand in the danger
zone
while releasing the lifting clamp after placing the stone in the storage
rack.
Note:Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
the hazard is to mechanically stabilize the stone slab by placing clamps
on it
before releasing and removing the lifting device. Another method is to
put both
upright supports in place prior to releasing the lifting clamp. In
addition, workers
should stabilize/guide slabs being transported from the ends of the slabs
at arms
length so if the slab falls or tips over, the employee is not in the
danger zone.
