Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to crushing and/or struck-by hazards:
(a) Service bay area, for employees operating the Forward four-post lifts
where padding
was wrapped around the "Latch Lock" mechanism creating a potential for the
locking
mechanism to not properly engage and exposing employees to potential
struck-by
hazards.
(b) Service bay area, for employees operating the Forward four-post lifts
where excessive
grease and other lubricating materials had accumulated on the slack chain
rod creating
a potential for the locking mechanism to not properly engage in the event
of failure.
Abatement Note:
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would
be to
follow the requirements of ANSI/ALI ALOIM and/or ANSI B153.1 which
includes,
among other requirements, the following:
1.Institute a preventive maintenance program according to the
manufacturer's
specifications.
2.Provide training to employees on proper use and care of the lifts.
3.Ensure all lifts are rated and marked with their load capacity.
4.Schedule and complete all periodic and annual inspections.
