North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and
Health Act of North Carolina:  The
employer did not furnish each of his employees conditions of employment
and a place of employment free
from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or
serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were exposed to falling on stairs or platform.
a)facility, bay #5 - where the employer failed to provide adequate
lighting in all areas of the
mechanic's pit when employees descended or ascended stairs and worked
underneath vehicles
with hand tools where one measured illumination reading was between 1.85
and 1.93 foot-
candles.

Note:Among other methods of abatement, feasible and acceptable methods to
correct this hazard is
to maintain installed lighting in operating condition, ensure a regular
scheduled system of
maintenance to clean the luminaries and transparent protective shields,
and if necessary install
additional fixed lighting systems ensuring a minimum of 20 foot-candles at
