Labor and Employment Article, Section 5-104(a): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a)Date of Violation:09/15/09 Location:Pickling Area Condition:A plumbed eyewash did not provide protection to spray heads from airborne contaminants, and was not located within ten seconds of the hazard where employees, working around large open pickling tanks, were exposed to hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid, both corrosives. (b)Date of Violation:09/15/09 Location:Maintenance Area/Pickling Area Condition:A plumbed eyewash was not located within ten seconds of the hazard where employees, adding water to forklift batteries, were exposed to corrosive sulfuric acid. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods of abatement to correct these hazard include protecting the spray heads from airborne contaminants and locating eyewashes within ten seconds of the hazard. Inspect eyewashes regularly to ensure that they are accessible and free of dirt and debris. Test plumbed eyewashes regularly to ensure that the proper flow rate and temperature are maintained. Abatement documentation (photographs, receipts, copies of programs, training certification, etc.) is required for this item.
