Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that press
operators were exposed to amputation or crushing type hazards:
a) Finishing Cell: A test procedure of the presence sensing device (light
curtain)
positioned on flattening press #117 was not performed after the set up to
ensure the
proper function of the equipment. An operator sustained a severe hand
injury after a
malfunction of the equipment occurred, on or about September 27, 2011.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this
hazard is to follow the manufacturer's recommended test procedures and
company's
Standard Mill Practice procedures.
