Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing, or likely to cause, death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to struck-by hazards with flying debris:
On December 06, 2011, and at times prior thereto, at this inspection site,
employees were exposed to the hazards of flying objects due to the
distribution
of compressed air through this establishment via polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
pipe.
Thermoplastic piping is subject to sudden failure and shattering when
utilized for
compressed air transport.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct
this
hazard would be to:
a.Replace the PVC piping system with an Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene
(ABS) piping system.
b.Enclose the PVC piping system in steel pipe, conduit, casing, or other
shatter-resistant materials.sistant
