General-duty citation text
29 CFR 1910.138(a): The employer did not select and require employee(s) to use appropriate hand protection when employees' hands were exposed to hazards such as those from skin absorption of harmful substances; severe cuts or lacerations; severe abrasion(a) In the Maintenance Shop, workers periodically performed manual paint gun cleaning using Crossfire Lacquer Thinner, a mixture of several hazardous chemicals, including acetone, butyl acetate, methyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, and xylene. Blue or black nitrile gloves were provided to the workers. However this type of glove was not appropriate for use with the lacquer thinner, because nitrile gloves tend to have poor chemical resistance to acetone, butyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone. Use of gloves with poor chemical resistance to these chemical components of the lacquer thinner could result in permeation of the lacquer thinner through the glove and exposure of workers' skin to the hazardous chemicals contained in this product. Some of the chemical components could enter the body via absorption through the skin and could, potentially, have negative health effects, such as, but not limited to, adverse effects on the central nervous system.
