OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards that would be created if the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic pipe were to rupture or explode. The PVC was used as a pressure air line distribution system throughout the auto shop:     Auto Repair Shop: PVC plastic pipe was used to distribute compressed air to the tire changing machine and to air line drops used for various air tools and tire servicing.     While ultimate responsibility for correcting the hazard rests with the employer, given his/her superior knowledge of the workplace, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard, among others, include:     1) Install black iron piping for the air distribution system;     2) Install ridged aluminum tube air distribution system;     3) Completely enclose all above ground portions of the plastic service in a shatter resistant conduit or casing of sufficient strength to provide protection from external damage and deterioration; or     4) Install approved impact resistant ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) pipe.
