OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fire hazard due to improper storage of magnesium: (a) Precision Casting Prototypes and Engineering Inc., dba Precise Cast Prototypes & Engineering, 7501 Dahlia St., Commerce City, CO 80022: On and before January 6, 2015, employees working in the facility were exposed to fire hazards in that the magnesium turnings from the machining tasks were stored outside in metal drums without adequate cover to protect the drums from inclement weather. The barrels were not adequately protected from accumulating water, snow, or ice, as snow and ice had accumulated on some of the lids. Some barrels were also observed without the metal rings used to secure the lids from displacement. This condition exposed employees to fire and explosion hazards. Abatement Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to store the magnesium turnings in drums with secured lids in a covered area. NFPA 484, Chapter 9, section 9.8.1.5.3.1. "Scraps shall be kept in covered steel or other non-combustible containers and shall be kept in such a manner or locations that they will not become wet".
